A northern cardinal was found in Texas with bilateral gynandromorphism, a rare phenomenon which makes it has the female plumage on one side of his body and male on the other. As birds have both an ovary and testes.

Can it mate with itself?
Sunday Morning and I have had my mind blown already….
That is a pretty cool looking Cardinal. Any idea how well they do when it comes to reproduction etc?
Two Face Cardinal Dent.
A Google search turned up some limited Information
Rare to see and harder to study little is known, what is known is the following
They don’t sing or court other birds for mating
No wild ones have been seen nesting or with chicks
A captive one had laid sterile eggs
An avian ovary and testis in Texas?
I thought it was the bird from the Angry Birds game.
This is a lie! he’s just doing it for attention! God made man birds and lady birds only! /s
First chemtrails were making frogs gay, now they’re making birds trans!
Looks like an Angry bird.
RUFIO! RUFIO! RU-FI-Ooooooooh!
Todoroki Birb
It’s Todoroki
How is it sitting so calmly though?
Imagine this on the shoulder of the main antagonist
Guy Fieri Bird.
so basically, an intersex bird? that’s really cool!!!
He’s very cool looking. I had never thought about what this would look like in a bird.. It’s very interesting- thank you for sharing it. How did you catch him & be able to hold him if he’s wild? -not meant sarcastic- genuinely curious. I love birds, bird-watching, anything to do with birds i enjoy. As a hobby, nothing scientific. I have hummingbirds, chestnut backed chickadees, sparrows, robins, stellars blue jays, ducks, geese all around where i live in the PNW and can’t even imagine holding any of them still, let alone catch one- how’d you do it?
Life….uhh uhh….finds a way..
The US Audubon Society just came out with a report that says [Two-Thirds of North American Birds at Risk of Extinction Due to Climate Change](https://www.audubon.org/climate/survivalbydegrees). Beyond [donating to the Audubon Society](https://act.audubon.org/onlineactions/Sy2GTJ1Jtkugo1SCyR572g2?ms=digital-fund-web-website_climate_landing) ([Charity Navigator review](https://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=search.summary&orgid=4160)), there are a few things you can do to help bird directly.
Cornell’s [Right Bird, Right House](https://nestwatch.org/learn/all-about-birdhouses/right-bird-right-house/) has birdhouse recommendations for the US and Canada that include instructions on how to build birdhouse for species at risk. You can also use the information to find a commercially made birdhouse suited for at risk birds. And birdhouses can make good Christmas gifts…..
[Audubon has a list of bird supporting plants by zip code](https://www.audubon.org/native-plants#) (you don’t have to enter your email, only your zip). Winter isn’t a great time for planting, but pre-ordering plants is a good idea.
[Cornell’s Nestwatch uses citizen scientists to collect data on nesting birds](https://nestwatch.org/about/overview/). Anyone in the US can participate. [There is also a special website for teachers](http://studentsdiscover.org/teaching-modules/nestwatch/).
[Audubon is running a bird count in the US and Canada between December 14, 2019 through January 5, 2020](https://www.audubon.org/conservation/join-christmas-bird-count). Participating is a little complicated- You contact the person in charge for your local area and they assign you an area and a date (likely as part of a team).
Wild bird?
Todoroki lmao
They look pissed
CDPR is that you?!
He/she doesn’t seem to be very happy.
When I first read the caption I pictured a Roman Catholic official, not a bird, and was very confused/concerned.
*deep scruffy voice* “Harvey Dent… can we trust him?”.
CD Projekt RED?
Forgot to flip it over halfway through baking.
It doesn’t look thrilled about the situation
It looks like it sat out in a blizzard for awhile where it had one side against the wind
Weird how it’s male and female features are divided in half. Imagine if humans who are born intersex had a single titty on one side of their body.
todoroki who?
“Why so angry?! Go fuck yourself”
In all my years of bird law I’ve never seen such a thing
Looks like a real life angry bird
so a hermaphrodite?
Such a Polish bird
Now THAT is a shiny to rival all other shinies.
Congrats on finding a shiny
“There are only 2 genders.”
“What about this bird tho?”
…
I just hope he finds a state where he’s allowed to use the restroom–
all hail the intersex bird
